What makes a sports floor different from any other wood floor?
A gymnasium floor is an engineered system, not a surface. The maple you see is the top of an assembly designed to absorb impact, return energy and control ball bounce — properties that are specified, measured and warranted.
Three performance characteristics define it:
- Shock absorption — how much impact energy the system removes from a landing. This is the athlete-safety number.
- Vertical deformation — how far and how locally the surface deflects under load. Too much and a player standing nearby feels it.
- Ball rebound — how consistently a ball returns compared with concrete. Inconsistency across a court is obvious to anyone playing on it.
The Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association publishes the standards these are measured against, and any specification worth reading cites them.
Why maple, specifically?
Northern hard maple has been the standard for over a century, and not for sentimental reasons.
It is hard — 1,450 Janka — so it takes point loads from bleachers and pivoting athletes. Its grain is very fine and closed, so it wears consistently and splinters less. It is dimensionally stable relative to its hardness. And it is pale, so game lines and logos read clearly from the stands and on broadcast.
Grade affects appearance far more than performance. MFMA grades run first, second, third and better. A third-and-better floor has noticeably more color variation and plays identically to a first-grade floor at a materially lower cost. On a school budget that is a real option worth understanding rather than defaulting past.
Which subfloor system should we specify?

The question that decides it is what the room is actually for. A middle-school gym that also hosts assemblies, graduation and a book fair has different requirements from a dedicated basketball facility, and specifying for basketball alone produces a floor that suffers under everything else.
Why does moisture testing matter so much?
Because it is where gym floors fail.
Concrete releases moisture vapor for years after it is poured, and a slab that feels bone dry can be pushing enough vapor to cup a maple floor within a season. Testing means relative humidity probes cast into the slab and left to equilibrate — not a surface meter and not a taped-down plastic sheet, both of which read only the top.
Where readings require it, a moisture mitigation membrane goes down first. That membrane is a real line item, and it costs a fraction of replacing a floor that failed in year one.
In this region, older Solano County school buildings on slabs, and anything near the Delta or the Napa River floodplain, deserve particular attention.
How do game lines work?
Lines are set out from the actual court dimensions, taped, and painted within the finish system so they end up sealed under the topcoats rather than sitting on the surface.
Two things need confirming before anything is cut in:
- Which governing body's dimensions apply. High school, NCAA and recreational specifications differ.
- Which sports share the floor. Basketball, volleyball and pickleball lines on one surface need a coherent color hierarchy or the floor becomes unreadable.
Center-court logos are the most photographed object in the building. They are either hand-painted or applied as a vinyl insert, and they are worth the extra day.
What does maintenance actually look like?
This is the section that decides the floor's lifespan, and it is the one most often deferred.
Annually — screen and recoat. Abrade the existing finish, apply one or two fresh coats. Two to three days. Done every summer, the floor never wears through to bare wood.
Every 8 to 15 years — full sand and refinish. Back to bare wood, lines repainted, the whole system rebuilt. One to two weeks with the building closed.
The economics are stark:

A facility that skips recoats saves a modest amount each year and pays for it several times over in premature refinishing — plus weeks of lost gym availability each time.
When should we schedule the work?
Summer, and book it a year out.
A full sand and refinish needs the gym empty and climate-controlled for a run of days: no deliveries across the floor, no bleachers moved, no doors propped open in July. The facilities managers who get the dates they want are the ones who call in the fall for the following summer.
Where a full closure genuinely is not possible, work can be phased — half court at a time, or across successive breaks. It costs more and takes longer, and sometimes it is the only option available.
What about prevailing wage and public works?
Work for school districts and public agencies in California generally falls under public works rules: prevailing wage rates, certified payroll and contractor registration with the Department of Industrial Relations.
If a project is going out to bid, say so at the start so the estimate is built correctly rather than revised later. License verification, comparable facility references and bid documentation should all be available on request from any contractor you are considering.
