Real wood that goes where solid hardwood cannot — slabs, radiant heat, wide plank.

Engineered hardwood is real wood veneer bonded over a cross-layered plywood core. It moves far less with humidity than solid wood, which lets it go over concrete slabs, over radiant heat, and in wide-plank widths that solid wood cannot hold. West Coast Floor Company installs it throughout Napa and Solano counties.
Engineered hardwood is a real hardwood wear layer bonded to a core of cross-laminated plywood or high-density fiberboard. The top surface is the same species, cut from the same log, as solid hardwood — walk on it and you cannot tell the difference. What differs is everything underneath.
Because the core layers run at right angles to each other, the board resists the seasonal expansion and contraction that solid wood cannot avoid. That single property is what makes it the answer in three situations solid hardwood simply cannot handle.
Over a concrete slab. Solid hardwood over slab is asking for trouble; the concrete releases vapor for years and the wood absorbs it. A great many houses in Fairfield, Vacaville, American Canyon and newer Napa subdivisions are slab-on-grade, and engineered with a moisture barrier is the standard answer.
Over radiant heat. Solid wood expands and contracts too much through heating cycles. Engineered handles it, with a controlled warm-up schedule before and after installation.
Wide plank. A 7-inch solid board moves visibly across a Napa winter. A 7-inch engineered board barely moves. Almost every wide-plank floor sold today is engineered, and that is the reason.
Wear-layer thickness, above everything else. This is the depth of real hardwood above the core, and it decides whether the floor can ever be refinished.

Manufacturers are noticeably reluctant to put this number on the front of the box. Ask for it, and be sceptical of a product that will not tell you.
Core construction. Plywood cores with more plies are more stable than HDF cores. HDF is harder but swells irreversibly if it gets wet.
Formaldehyde compliance. Engineered products sold in California must meet CARB Phase 2 limits, now harmonized with the federal TSCA Title VI rule. Reputable products carry the labeling; anything imported through an unusual channel deserves a closer look.
Less than it used to be. Twenty years ago engineered was regarded as a compromise. Today a good engineered floor with a thick wear layer is specified in high-end new construction as a matter of course, particularly in wide plank and white oak, and appraisers treat it as a real wood floor.
Where solid still wins is longevity: a 3/4-inch solid floor can be refinished six to ten times and outlive everyone in the house. If you plan to stay for decades over a wood subfloor, solid is still the better long-term asset.
Glue-down over a slab, with a moisture barrier and the manufacturer's specified adhesive. The quietest and most solid-feeling method.
Nail or staple down over a plywood subfloor, exactly like solid hardwood.
Floating, where boards lock to each other over an underlayment. Fastest and most forgiving of subfloor irregularity, and it sounds hollower underfoot — worth standing on a floating sample before committing.
Whichever method, the slab or subfloor gets tested first. Every engineered floor failure we get called out to see traces back to moisture that nobody measured.
