Which should I choose?
Short version: tile where there is standing water, LVP where there might be, laminate where there will not be but there will be dog claws and dragged chairs.
The longer version is that these three products fail in completely different ways, and matching the failure mode to the room is the whole decision.

Where does each one actually belong?
Kitchens: LVP or tile. A dishwasher leak is a matter of when, not whether. Laminate's fiberboard core does not forgive it.
Bathrooms and laundry: tile, ideally. Over a proper waterproofing membrane. LVP is a legitimate second choice on a budget or in a rental. Not laminate.
Entries and mudrooms: tile. Especially on rural properties around Dixon or anywhere grit and mud arrive daily.
Family rooms with dogs: LVP, 20 mil wear layer. Waterproof, tough, and individual planks replace if something goes badly wrong.
Bedrooms and hallways: laminate is fine here, if the budget points that way — its wear surface is genuinely the toughest of the three against scratching.
Sunrooms and rooms with big west-facing glass: rigid SPC vinyl or tile. WPC-core vinyl can expand under sustained solar gain, which matters more in Vacaville than almost anywhere.
What number should I actually look at?
Each product has one specification that predicts its lifespan, and it is not the price.
LVP: the wear layer, in mils.
- 6 mil — light residential only
- 12 mil — normal residential
- 20 mil — busy family homes, pets, light commercial
- 28 mil+ — commercial and rental turnover
Laminate: the AC rating.
- AC3 — the sensible residential minimum
- AC4 — heavy residential, the right choice for a family home
- AC5 — heavy commercial
Tile: the PEI rating and, for wet areas, slip resistance. PEI 3 or above for floors; PEI 4 for busy entries.
For LVP and laminate, the step up to the recommended grade is a small price difference and a large difference in how the floor looks after five years.
What about hardwood?
Worth naming, because it is the option these three are usually competing against.
If your house has a wood subfloor and there is already hardwood under the carpet — which describes a great many houses in Vallejo, Benicia and older Napa — refinishing it will typically cost less than installing any of these three, look better, and be worth more at sale. Wood gets refinished; these get replaced.
That is not true in a slab house, a bathroom, or a rental. But it is worth checking before defaulting to a hard-surface product.
Is any of this waterproof, really?
Tile is, if the installation is. The tile and the porcelain body are impervious. Cement grout is not, which is why a waterproofing membrane goes behind and beneath it in wet areas. Tile installed without one is not a waterproof floor; it is a floor with a slow leak.
LVP is, as a plank. Water still travels through the seams and into the subfloor if it sits long enough. It survives what would destroy laminate, and a sustained leak can still damage what is underneath.
Laminate mostly is not, whatever the box says. "Water-resistant" means a wiped-up spill. "Waterproof" laminate uses a different core and comes with a warranty that specifies exactly what is covered — read that warranty rather than the marketing.
What about sound?
An underrated factor, particularly upstairs and in open-plan houses.
Laminate is the loudest, because it floats over an air gap that acts like a drum. Good acoustic underlayment makes a substantial difference and is the cheapest upgrade on the job — cheap foam does very little.
LVP with an SPC core is noticeably quieter. Tile is loud and hard, and rugs are the only real remedy.
What about underfloor heating?
Tile is the best of the three by a wide margin. It conducts heat efficiently and does not object to the temperature cycling, which is why an electric mat under a tiled bathroom floor is one of the genuinely worthwhile upgrades in a house — and far cheaper to install during a tile job than to retrofit later.
LVP works over radiant heat within limits, and every manufacturer specifies a maximum surface temperature, usually around 80°F. Exceed it and the plank can distort or the adhesive can fail.
Laminate is the weakest fit. Its fiberboard core does not respond well to sustained heat cycling, and several manufacturers void the warranty outright. Check the specific product before assuming.
The one-line summary
Buy tile where water lives, LVP where water visits, and laminate where it does not — and in each case buy the grade above the entry level, because the price difference is small and the difference in five years is not.
