Why does wood move at all?
Wood is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air when the air is humid and gives it back when the air is dry, swelling and shrinking as it does. A finished floor slows this down. It does not stop it.
That is not a defect. It is what wood is, and it is why every wood floor is installed with an expansion gap around its perimeter, hidden under the base molding.
Why does the same floor behave differently across the county?

What is cupping, and what causes it?
Cupping is when board edges sit higher than their centers, so the floor looks like a row of shallow troughs. It always means the same thing: the underside of the wood is wetter than the top.
The wood swells more where it is wet, and since the top is drier and restrained by the finish, the edges lift.
The causes, in the order we find them:
- An unsealed crawl space. Bare earth under the house evaporating moisture upward. By far the most common cause in older Vallejo, Benicia, Napa and Suisun City homes.
- An untested slab. Concrete passing vapor into flooring with no barrier.
- A leak. Dishwasher, refrigerator line, or a bathroom above.
- Flooring installed before it acclimated.
What is the cheap fix?
For crawl-space cupping, a vapor barrier over the bare earth — properly lapped and secured — plus adequate venting. It is a fraction of the cost of a floor and it addresses the problem at its source.
We say this often enough that it is worth saying plainly: if your older home has a crawl space with bare dirt in it, put a vapor barrier down before you spend anything on the floor above it. Refinishing a floor that is going to keep cupping is money spent twice.
Should I sand a cupped floor flat?
Not until it has dried out and stabilized — and that is a real wait, often several months.
Sand a cupped floor while it is still wet underneath and you flatten it in its swollen state. When it eventually dries and shrinks, the boards invert into crowning: centers higher than the edges. That is much harder to fix than the original cupping, and it costs another pass of the floor's thickness.
Fix the moisture, wait, then sand.
What humidity should I keep the house at?
The industry guidance is 30 to 50 percent relative humidity, and 35 to 45 is the comfortable middle.
In practice, most Napa and Solano homes sit in that band naturally for much of the year. The pressure points are:
- Summer in Vacaville, Dixon, St. Helena and Calistoga, where continuous air conditioning can pull indoor humidity well below 30 percent. A humidifier helps if gaps are bothering you.
- Winter anywhere, when heating dries the air again.
- Houses left empty, which is a real issue with second homes in the valley. A house closed up for three months with no climate control will move its floors more than an occupied one.
A cheap hygrometer tells you where you actually are, and it costs less than a single square foot of flooring.
Does this change what I should install?
It changes the widths and the material, not whether you can have wood.
- Engineered hardwood barely moves and works everywhere in the region.
- Solid hardwood at conventional widths performs well in Vallejo, Benicia, Napa, American Canyon and Howell Mountain.
- Wide plank over five inches should be engineered anywhere in the county, and definitely in the upper valley.
- Over a slab, engineered or LVP, always.
The short version
Wood moves. Where you live decides how much. Almost every moisture problem we are called out to look at comes from below the floor rather than above it, and almost all of those are fixed with a vapor barrier and some patience.
